Ingredients
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter (for onions)
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons softened butter (for dough)
1 cup warm water
1 ½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or mix)
1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
1. Slice onions and sauté in butter until caramelized and golden, then set aside to cool.
2. In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast, and let sit until foamy.
3. Add flour, salt, and softened butter to the yeast mixture and knead until smooth and elastic.
4. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
5. Punch down dough and roll into a large rectangle.
6. Spread caramelized onions evenly and sprinkle with shredded cheese.
7. Roll dough tightly and place in a greased loaf pan. Let rise again until puffy.
8. Brush top with melted butter and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
9. Let cool slightly, slice, and serve warm.
