Description

A classic, comforting Traditional Potato Gratin recipe made with layers of Yukon Gold potatoes, rich cream, and melty Gruyère cheese. Perfect as a cozy side dish or show-stopping holiday favorite. This creamy potato casserole pairs beautifully with steak, roast chicken, and more.

Ingredients

2 pounds potatoes

2 cups heavy cream

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 ½ cups Gruyère cheese, shredded

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a medium baking dish.

2. Peel and thinly slice potatoes into 1/8 inch rounds using a mandoline if possible.

3. In a saucepan, heat cream, minced garlic, salt, and pepper over low heat until it begins to simmer. Let it infuse for 2–3 minutes, then remove from heat.

4. Layer one-third of the potato slices into the baking dish. Pour over a portion of the cream mixture and sprinkle some cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.

5. Pour any remaining cream on top, sprinkle the rest of the cheese, and dot with small butter pieces.

6. Bake uncovered for 60 to 70 minutes until golden brown and tender when pierced.

7. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving to set.

Notes

Make sure the cream is warm before pouring, it helps the potatoes cook evenly.

Let the gratin rest before slicing to enhance texture and flavor.

For extra flavor, add a pinch of ground nutmeg or thin-sliced onions between layers.
