Description

This Southern Sweet Potato Casserole recipe is a classic holiday favorite made with creamy sweet potatoes, brown sugar, butter, and a crunchy pecan topping. Perfect for Thanksgiving or any comforting family meal. A beloved Southern side dish that doubles as dessert.

Ingredients

2 ½ pounds sweet potatoes

½ cup brown sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

¼ cup milk

2 large eggs, beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

⅓ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup chopped pecans

⅓ cup brown sugar (for topping)

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for topping)

Instructions

1. Peel and chop the sweet potatoes, then boil until fork-tender. Drain and transfer to a mixing bowl.

2. Mash sweet potatoes until smooth. Stir in brown sugar, melted butter, milk, eggs, vanilla, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until creamy.

3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, chopped pecans, brown sugar, and melted butter to make the topping.

4. Spread sweet potato mixture in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle pecan topping evenly over the top.

5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes until the topping is golden and crisp. Let rest before serving.

Notes

This recipe can be made ahead and baked the next day.

If using canned sweet potatoes, reduce the sugar slightly.

Optional: Add a splash of bourbon or maple syrup for extra depth.
