Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup warm water or coffee
1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. Add eggs, oil, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
4. Slowly pour in warm water or coffee and stir until fully incorporated. Batter will be thin.
5. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
6. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
7. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
8. Serve as-is, or with powdered sugar or your favorite frosting.
Notes
This cake can be made ahead and stored for up to 3 days at room temperature.
For stronger chocolate flavor, use coffee instead of water.
Chocolate chips are optional but add extra richness and texture.
