Description

Salted Caramel Buttercream Frosting is the perfect sweet-and-salty topping for cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and more. Made with real homemade caramel, this rich, fluffy buttercream adds decadent flavor to your favorite desserts.


Ingredients

1 cup granulated sugar

6 tablespoons heavy cream

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 ½ cups powdered sugar

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions

1. In a medium saucepan, melt the granulated sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until it becomes a deep amber liquid.

2. Slowly add in the heavy cream while stirring. Be cautious—it will bubble up. Continue stirring until smooth.

3. Remove from heat and stir in the salt and vanilla extract. Let the caramel cool completely.

4. In a large bowl, beat the unsalted butter until pale and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

5. Add the cooled caramel to the butter and beat until fully incorporated.

6. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating on low until combined, then increase speed to high and whip until light and fluffy.

7. Chill frosting for 15 minutes if it’s too soft to pipe or spread.

Notes

Use only fully cooled caramel to avoid melting the butter.

Re-whip frosting before using if stored in the fridge.

For a flavor twist, add a splash of bourbon or espresso to the caramel.
