This easy homemade hoisin sauce recipe is the perfect sweet, salty, and umami-packed condiment to upgrade your Asian-inspired meals. Made in under 10 minutes with pantry staples like soy sauce, peanut butter, and honey, it’s healthier and more flavorful than store-bought hoisin. Great for stir-fries, dipping, marinades, and more.
Ingredients
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons rice vinegar
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 to 2 teaspoons sriracha or chili sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
2 to 3 tablespoons water (as needed for consistency)
Instructions
1. Measure all ingredients before starting.
2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, peanut butter, honey, rice vinegar, garlic powder, sriracha, sesame oil, and five-spice powder.
3. Whisk everything together until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
4. Add 1 tablespoon of water at a time, whisking between additions, until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.
5. Taste the sauce and adjust to your preference: add more honey for sweetness, vinegar for tang, or chili sauce for heat.
6. Transfer to a jar and refrigerate. Stir before using if any separation occurs.
Notes
Use natural peanut butter for a more savory profile.
The sauce will thicken slightly in the fridge.
This recipe yields just under 1 cup—perfect for a few meals or dipping nights.
