Description

This Homemade Egg And Cheese Strata is a comforting breakfast casserole made with fluffy eggs, toasted bread cubes, milk, and melted cheddar and mozzarella cheese. Perfect for brunch, holiday breakfasts, or meal prep mornings, this easy egg strata recipe is rich, cheesy, and simple to prepare ahead of time. If you are looking for a hearty breakfast casserole, overnight breakfast bake, or classic egg and cheese brunch recipe, this homemade strata is a delicious option.

Ingredients

8 large eggs

2 cups milk

6 cups day old bread cubes

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons butter melted

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 cup sliced green onions

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.

2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish to create the base layer.

3. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until smooth and fully combined.

4. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and sliced green onions evenly over the bread cubes.

5. Pour the egg mixture slowly over the bread and cheese making sure the bread absorbs the liquid evenly.

6. Gently press the bread down with a spoon so it soaks up the custard mixture.

7. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for the best texture.

8. Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes until the center is set and the top is golden brown.

9. Let the strata rest for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For the best texture use slightly stale bread so it absorbs the egg mixture without becoming soggy.

This recipe can be assembled the night before which makes it perfect for easy morning breakfasts or brunch gatherings.

You can customize the strata by adding cooked bacon sausage mushrooms or spinach.
