Description

This Homemade Amish Sweet Bread is a soft, fluffy, slightly sweet bread made with simple pantry staples. Perfect for breakfast, toast, sandwiches, or sweet snacks. A classic, old-fashioned white bread recipe that’s easy to make and deeply comforting.

Ingredients

2 cups warm water

2 tablespoons active dry yeast

2/3 cup sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup vegetable oil

6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

2. Add salt and oil to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled.

5. Punch down the dough and divide in half. Shape into loaves and place into greased loaf pans. Let rise again for 30–40 minutes.

6. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake for 25–30 minutes until tops are golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped.

7. Cool in pans for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Slice and enjoy warm or toasted.

Notes

This bread is freezer-friendly and perfect for making ahead.

You can add cinnamon, raisins, or nuts for extra flavor.

Use fresh yeast and warm water (about 110°F) to ensure a good rise.
