Description

This French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole is the ultimate comfort food casserole recipe. Packed with caramelized onions, ground beef, fluffy white rice, and melted mozzarella cheese, it’s an easy, hearty, and family-friendly dinner idea that’s perfect for weeknights or meal prep. A flavorful twist on a classic casserole using simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

1 cup white rice, uncooked

2 ½ cups beef broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

1. Thinly slice the onions and cook them in a skillet with butter over medium-low heat for 25–30 minutes until caramelized.

2. While the onions cook, brown the ground beef in a separate skillet. Drain excess fat, season with garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.

3. Cook white rice in beef broth instead of water to boost flavor.

4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

5. In a large mixing bowl or casserole dish, combine the cooked beef, caramelized onions, and cooked rice. Stir to mix evenly.

6. Spread the mixture evenly in a casserole dish and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

7. Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Let the onions caramelize slowly for the best flavor.

Using beef broth instead of water when cooking rice intensifies the savory taste.

Mozzarella cheese gives a gooey top, but Swiss or Gruyère are great alternatives.
