Description

A rich and creamy creamed chipped beef recipe made with dried beef in a buttery milk-based gravy, served over toast or biscuits. This quick, comforting classic is perfect for breakfast or brunch. Easy chipped beef recipe, nostalgic comfort food, hearty breakfast.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk

5 ounces dried beef, sliced into strips

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

4 slices toast or biscuits, for serving

Instructions

1. Slice or tear the dried beef into thin strips. If overly salty, rinse under cold water and pat dry.

2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.

3. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk constantly to form a smooth roux. Cook 1–2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.

4. Slowly add the milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps.

5. Continue to cook and stir until the sauce thickens and gently bubbles.

6. Stir in the dried beef slices and simmer for 2–3 more minutes.

7. Season with black pepper to taste.

8. Serve the creamed chipped beef hot over toast or biscuits.

Notes

This dish is naturally salty—taste before adding additional salt.

Whole milk creates the richest gravy, but 2% milk also works well.

Leftovers can be stored for up to 3 days in the fridge and reheated with a splash of milk.
