Description
This Caramelized Onion & Gruyère Stuffed Bread Wreath is a golden, cheesy pull-apart bread filled with sweet caramelized onions and nutty Gruyère. Perfect as a holiday appetizer, brunch centerpiece, or savory party snack. Great with soup or salad, and easy to make with pizza dough or puff pastry.
Ingredients
2 large yellow onions
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 sheet puff pastry or 1 pound pizza dough
1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
1. Slice the onions thinly. In a skillet, melt butter with olive oil over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook, stirring often, until golden and caramelized, about 30-40 minutes. Stir in thyme, salt, and pepper. Let cool.
2. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the cooled onions evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the Gruyère cheese on top.
3. Roll the dough into a long log. Cut it lengthwise down the middle, then twist the two pieces together, keeping the cut sides facing up. Shape into a wreath and pinch the ends.
4. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the top with a beaten egg.
5. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.
6. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Notes
Use puff pastry for a flaky texture or pizza dough for a bready finish.
Gruyère can be swapped with Emmental or Fontina if needed.
Store leftovers wrapped in foil and reheat in the oven to preserve texture.
