Black Velvet Cupcakes are rich, dark, and irresistibly moist chocolate cupcakes with black cocoa, buttermilk, and cream cheese frosting. Perfect for Halloween, themed parties, or whenever you crave a bold dessert. This dramatic twist on red velvet is both easy and unforgettable.
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup black cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 large egg
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon black gel food coloring
8 oz cream cheese
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.
2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, black cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, egg, vinegar, vanilla extract, and black food coloring.
4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry, stirring just until combined. Do not overmix.
5. Divide batter evenly among cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
6. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
7. Let cupcakes cool completely before frosting.
8. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar gradually and beat until fluffy.
9. Frost cupcakes and top with black sprinkles or edible glitter if desired.
Notes
Use black cocoa powder for that signature dark color and deep flavor.
Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cupcakes tender.
Make sure cupcakes are fully cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
