Description

This best apple pie filling recipe combines tart and sweet apples with cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar for a rich, homemade flavor. Perfect for pies, pancakes, oatmeal, or as a warm dessert topping. Make-ahead, freezer-friendly, and easy to prepare!

Ingredients

6 cups sliced apples

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/3 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

3 tablespoons cornstarch

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Peel, core, and slice your apples into 1/4-inch thick slices.

2. In a bowl, mix brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch.

3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt a bit of butter and add apples.

4. Sprinkle the spice-sugar mix over the apples and stir gently to coat.

5. Add lemon juice and cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring frequently until apples are tender and the sauce thickens.

6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

7. Let the filling cool completely before using in pies or storing.

Notes

Make sure to use a mix of tart and sweet apples for balance.

Don’t overcook the apples—they should hold their shape.

Let the filling cool fully before adding to pie crust to avoid sogginess.
